With the new year still upon us, I’m sure many of you are striving to make this new year a year of taking your relationship with God and your personal devotions more seriously!
And for today’s blog post, I’d like to share 5 Bible verses you can claim to help you get the most out of your devotional time with the Lord!
Let’s dive in!
1. Exodus 33:13
Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
(Exodus 33:13)
I personally would claim this particular Bible promise, and ask the Lord to “show me” His way as I begin to read word His Holy Word, so “I may know [Him]” better.
You can do the same exact thing for your own personal devotions!
2. Nehemiah 8:2
And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.
(Nehemiah 8:2)
I claim this particular part of Nehemiah 8:2 as a Bible promise for my own devotional walk:
“Hear with understanding”
I would take that part of the verse and ask God to help me “hear with understanding” the lessons He wants me to “hear” as I do my devotions.
Again, you can also do the same for your own devotional walk as well!
3. Nehemiah 8:3
And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.
(Nehemiah 8:3, emphasis added)
The particular part of Nehemiah 8:3 that says:
“The ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.”
That is another verse I would pray over, asking the Lord to make me attentive to what He’s teaching me in His Holy Word.
4. Nehemiah 8:8
So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
(Nehemiah 8:8, emphasis added)
That word “sense” in this verse means “prudence.”
Now, what exactly does “prudence” have to do with building a better devotional life?
In fact, what in the world does “prudence” mean anyway?
One dictionary defines “prudence” this way:
“Practical wisdom to see what is suitable or profitable.”
So, here’s the application we can glean from this verse in light of personal devotions.
When claiming Nehemiah 8:8, pray for the Lord to send His Holy Spirit to give you that “practical wisdom” to clearly see, and to clearly understand the lessons that are spiritually suitable for you and your situations/struggles as you read God’s Word.
5. Jeremiah 24:7
And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.
(Jeremiah 24:7)
This Bible promise is probably the best of all.
Claim this promise first and foremost to have that HEART to KNOW God more as you begin your personal devotions.
After all, as one Christian put it:
“There are many who try to reform by correcting this or that bad habit, and they hope in this way to become Christians, but they are beginning in the wrong place. Our first work is with the heart.”
(Christ’s Object Lessons pg. 97)
A Prayer
Dear reader, would you like to claim all five of these promises over your personal devotional walk with Christ?
Then I wanna encourage you to pray:
Amen! Maranatha!
