Zechariah 4:6 gives us the next important necessity we need to have a true Christian heart.
In Zechariah 4:6 we read:
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
(Zechariah 4:6)
What does that mean?
And how does this apply to the next step to cultivating a true Christian heart?
Well, I honestly just LOVE how Matthew Henry’s Bible commentary explains this verse very well:
The work of God is often carried on very successfully when yet it is carried on very silently, and without the assistance of human force; the gospel-temple is built, not by might or power (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal), but by the Spirit of the Lord of hosts, whose work on men’s consciences is mighty to the pulling down of strong-holds; thus the excellency of the power is of God, and not of man. When instruments fail, let us therefore leave it to God to do his work himself by his own Spirit.
(Zechariah 4:6)
The Application
How does this apply to cultivating a true Christian heart?
Only the Holy Spirit can construct such a heart in us.
Only the Holy Spirit can truly sanctify us to be real Christians?
Only the Lord can do such a thing through His Spirit’s power.
The Bible puts it like this in Jeremiah 31:3-4, which says:
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry.
(Jeremiah 31:3-4)
Only God can build us up to be true Christians through the power of The Holy Spirit.
John 15:5 says that without Jesus, we “can do nothing.”
And “nothing” includes living as true Christians.
Without the power of the Holy Spirit and the strengthening grace of Jesus, living out the true Christian life would be IMPOSSIBLE.
But praise God for the promise of Matthew 19:26!
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
(Matthew 19:26)
Another Important Element
Psalm 119:97 says:
O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
(Psalm 119:97)
It’s obvious that loving obedience to God’s law and way is a major hallmark of true Christian living.
But how can such be possible for us?
Again, it can only be possible in the Holy Spirit and power of Christ!
Romans 5:5 makes this truth explicitly clear:
And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
(Romans 5:5)
Only through the Holy Spirit we can become truly built up into true Christians!
Only through the Holy Spirit we can have a willing love to fully live for God in total obedience, surrender, and devotion!
