One of my favorite Christian writers made an interesting statement on the topic of service:
The only way to grow in grace is to be interestedly doing the very work Christ has enjoined upon us to do.
(Christian Service pg. 101)
It’s true that consistent time with God in His Word also promotes spiritual growth.
But there’s something about being of service to the Lord that really strengthens growth in grace.
It’s kinda like exercise.
Exercise is essential to maintaining good physical health, and so the spiritual exercise of serving God and others is important to maintain adequate spiritual health as we seek to live as true Christians.
It makes me think of how the Bible puts it in Romans 12:11 and Matthew 5:16, which says:
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
(Romans 12:11)
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
(Matthew 5:16)
If we desire to truly maintain our “fervor” in the Lord as true Christians, and shine out as true Christians in our daily lives, then service to God and others is of vital importance.
Where Can I Start Serving God?
Probably the best place to serve the Lord if you are first starting out is in your own local church!
After all, you’re already going there every week, so why not turn your current status from being just a mere member to a servant for God and others in your congregation?
I mean, after all, the Bible does encourage service to other Christians believers:
As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
(Galatians 6:10)
A Prayer
Friend, would you like to begin serving the Lord and others as a part of maintaining a spiritually healthy, true Christian life?
If so, then you may pray:
I wanna end this blog post with a Bible promise.
And that Bible promise is Ephesians 2:10, which says:
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
(Ephesians 2:10)
Amen! Maranatha!
