Sobering Truths (Pt. 3: Pinterest Should NEVER Be Your Pastor)

Continuing onto Part 3 of our series on exposing various modern culture ideologies that are prevailing in our world, and digging deep into the sobering yet Biblical truths behind them, let’s now get into some of the two popular concepts that are going around social media platforms like Pinterest.

Now, before we dive in, if you missed out on parts 1 and/or 2 of this series, you can access part 1 here and part 2 here.

Anyway, let’s start exploring and exposing our first example of a sweetly popular yet bitterly deceptive philosophy that has been hopping around Pinterest.

Example 1

Let’s look into our first example of an EXTREMELY popular concept that has been taking the social media world by storm.

Now, why is this bitterly deceptive?

2 Timothy 3:1-3 gives us the answer:

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

(2 Timothy 3:1-3, emphasis added)

2 Timothy 3 associates the idea of people “loving themselves” with the “perilous times” of the last days.

That word “perilous” surprisingly means “dangerous, troublesome, and harsh.”

But how could this seemingly innocent concept of loving ourselves be harsh, troublesome, and even dangerous?

Well, one of my favorite Christian authors, Ellen White, had this rather sobering statement on this popular philosophy of loving self more:

Those who are filled with self-esteem and self-love do not feel the need of a living, personal union with Christ. The heart that has not fallen on the Rock is proud of its wholeness. Men want a dignified religion. They desire to walk in a path wide enough to take in their own attributes. Their self-love, their love of popularity and love of praise, exclude the Saviour from their hearts, and without Him there is gloom and sadness. But Christ dwelling in the soul is a wellspring of joy. For all who receive Him, the very keynote of the word of God is rejoicing.

(Christ’s Object Lessons pg. 162, emphasis added)

Example 2

Obviously, this second example in the above image is in direct opposition to the truths in God’s word about pride and being prideful.

Many of these truths are found in the book of Proverbs, such Proverbs 6:16-18, which says:

These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,

(Proverbs 6:16-18, emphasis added)

The very first thing that God’ hates according to these verses is a proud look!

Proverbs 16:5 is another sobering verse to consider regarding what the Bible clearly says about being proud:

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

(Proverbs 16:5)

Lastly Proverbs 21:4 says:

An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

(Proverbs 21:4)

Conclusion

Dear reader, it’s obvious that social media–while can still be used for spiritually edifying purposes–can also have elements of spiritually corruptive deception, as we’ve just looked at in today’s blog post.

It’s my sincere hope and prayer that God will give us eyes to see and to discern “between the unclean and the clean” (Ezekiel 44:23) whenever we come across things on social media, the Internet, or even when we’re out and about.

And with the rise of new technology like Artificial Intelligence (A. I.), the spiritual necessity of discernment is even greater.

Why?

Well, we’ll dive into that in our fourth and final part of our series next week!

Stay tuned!
