3 Bible Promises To Claim As You Begin Your Devotions

In the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing blog posts on how to practically dig into and get the most out of your personal morning devotions, and as a continuation of that theme, I’d like to share three simple Bible promises you can prayerfully claim as a part of your devotional prayer time just before you get into your devotions!

Bible Promise #1: Psalm 119:18

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

(Psalm 119:18)

I have always considered this to be one of the simplest and yet the most straight-forward Bible promises to claim as you begin to dig into your devotional Bible reading time.

I really like how Charles Spurgeon’s commentary on this verse emphasizes the spiritual significance of needing to prayerfully claim this powerful Psalm in our own personal devotions:

The prayer implies a conscious darkness, a dimness of spiritual vision, a powerlessness to remove that defect, and a full assurance that God can remove it. It shows also that the writer knew that there were vast treasures in the word which he had not yet fully seen, marvels which he had not yet beheld, mysteries which he had scarcely believed. The Scriptures teem with marvels; the Bible is wonder land; it not only relates miracles, but it is itself a world of wonders. Yet what are these to closed eyes? And what man can open his own eyes, since he is born blind? God himself must reveal revelation to each heart. Scripture needs opening, but not one half so much as our eyes do: the veil is not on the book, but on our hearts.

-Charles Spurgeon

Bible Promise #2: Nehemiah 8:8

So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

(Nehemiah 8:8)

Here’s how I like to personally claim this Bible promise.

I just simply pray that the Lord would “cause” me to “understand” what I’m about to read in His Word.

Bible Promise #3: Ephesians 1:18

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

(Ephesians 1:18)

I’ve always loved claiming this Bible promise when I was first beginning to take my walk with the Lord more seriously.

For me, this Bible verse meant just asking the Lord to enlighten (or open) the “eyes” of my “understanding” to know and understand what I’m about to read in His Word, to stay focused on what it is He is about to teach me, and to truly “digest” His truths more deeply into my mind.
