Evaluating Your Pie Filling

Most of you may not be aware of it, but today (October 19) is Evaluate Your Life Day!

What in the world is Evaluate Your Life Day you may ask?

Well, according to Wellcat.com, Evaluate Your Life Day is all about encouraging “everyone to check and see if they’re really headed where they want to be.”

And for us Christians, this is a perfect time to evaluate our spiritual lives and “examine [ourselves], whether [we] be in the faith” (2 Corinthians 13:5).

But the question is, where do we begin when it comes to evaluating and examining our spiritual lives as Christians?

Heart Bottles

I believe the answer can be found in Jeremiah 13:12, which says:

“Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: “Every bottle shall be filled with wine.”

(Jeremiah 13:12)

The word “wine” in this verse also means “intoxication.” And another word for “intoxication” is “drunkenness.”

That reminds me of what Jesus said in Luke 21:34–

“But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.”

(Luke 21:34)

So, in Jeremiah 13:12, Israel is filled with “wine,” or drunkenness, because of their idolatrous disobedience against God.

That’s quite a contrast to two significant Bible verses in the New Testament:

“And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”

(Acts 5:32)

“And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,”

(Ephesians 5:18)

So, how does all this connect to Evaluate Your Life Day?

Well, before we get into that question, let’s first talk about pies.

Wait…What? Pies?

Yes, you read that right.

Pies.

Now, what in the world do pies have to do with this devotional blog post?

Quite simply, the answer is this.

The reason why a blueberry pie is called a blueberry pie is because it has BLUEBERRY pie FILLING. The reason why an apple pie is called an apple pie is because it has APPLE pie FILLING.

And the reason why a genuine Christian can be called a genuine Christian is because he or she has the genuine Christian FILLING of the Holy Spirit in his or her heart.

So, again, how does all this relate to evaluating our spiritual lives as Christians?

Dear reader, what kind of “pie filling” does your heart have?

As you examine your life as a professed Christian, are you filled with the godly filling of the Holy Spirit?

Or, as you examine your Christian life, are you honestly filled with the drunkenness of this world?

A Prayer

Dear reader, if you feel convicted for allowing the worldly, intoxicating filling to outweigh the filling of God’s Spirit in your heart, I wanna encourage you to pray:

I would like to conclude this blog post with a beautiful song called “Fill Me Now.” As you listen to it below, may your heart become even more inspired to be filled even more with the godly filling of the Holy Spirit!

Amen! Maranatha!
