Today we’re gonna move onto Part 4 of our series on digging into spiritually meaty lessons from the not-so-flawless lives of different Bible “villains” from the New Testament! For Part 4 of this series, we’re gonna learn one spiritually deep lesson from a fairly infamous female New Testament character:
HERODIAS!
Who Was Herodias?
In Mark 6:17-18, we read something that helps give us an idea of who Herodias was:
So, Herodias was married to Herod’s brother, Philip. But then apparently decided to ditch the poor guy for Herod, her brother-in-law.
Another thing that I found interesting was that Herodias’ name means “heroic.”
What lesson can we as Christians learn from this?
Hailing Hero
In a way, like Herodias, we as Christians may also strive to be “heroic” in the world’s eyes.
Even at the cost of ditching our covenant relationship with God, Who declares Himself to be our husband.
Going back to Herodias, the next two questions I’d like us to dig into are:
- Why exactly did Herodias choose to ditch her husband?
- How does her reason(s) to leave him apply to us and our own relationship with God?
Chasing Crowns
According to the Benson Bible Commentary, it gives one possible reason why Herodias likely ditched her husband for Herod:
How does this apply to us as Christians in our modern day and age?
Like Herodias, is it possible that, in our personal Christian lives, we’re going after the crowns of worldly wealth, fame, and ease?
Even at the cost of ditching our personal relationship with Christ?
Even at the cost of closing out any windows of time to spend with God?
Dear reader, are you ditching Jesus for the crowns that the world is offering? Are you closing Jesus out of certain areas of your heart just so you can focus better on sharing in the earthly crowns of fame, wealth, pride, ease, and popularity?
Are you uplifting the crowns of this world above the crown of life Jesus has promised to those who are faithful to Him? To those who DON’T ditch Him? To those who DON’T close Him out?
An Appeal & A Prayer
If, dear reader, you feel convicted by the Holy Spirit for acting like Herodias, and ditching Jesus for the crowns of this world, I wanna appeal to you to simply pray:
I’d like to conclude this blog post with a Bible verse you may claim and meditate on along with the above prayer:
Amen! Maranatha!
