How To Pray To God In Your Own Words (Pt. 1)

In a survey that was shared in The Christian Post, 31% of young adults from the ages of 18-34 stated that they “were more likely to repeat a set prayer” than pray to the Lord in their own words.

When I saw that statistic, I personally felt convinced that now was the time to….well, start helping all you Christian young adults out there (and anyone else) to learn HOW to pray to God in your own words!

Let’s dive in!

Key Principle #1: Pour Out

Psalm 62:8 says:

Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

(Psalm 62:8)

I really like how the VOICE Bible puts this verse:

Have faith in Him in all circumstances, dear people. Open up your heart to Him; the True God shelters us in His arms.

(Psalm 62:8 VOICE)

What key principle can we glean from this verse, and how can we apply it to praying to God in our own words?

Quite simply, to first begin talking to God in our own words whenever we pray, we need to “pour out” our hearts to Him.

We need to “open up” our hearts to Him.

What does that look like?

It looks like praying and talking to the Lord about whatever is on your mind.

Whether it’s telling Him something you’re concerned about or something you’re grateful for, tell God about it!

God is your “Friend Who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). He wants to hear you speak to Him!

Key Principle #2: Write Out

If you’re struggling to talk to the Lord in prayer verbally in your own words, I suggest writing out your prayers in a prayer journal.

Journaling out your prayers is a simple and practical way to begin praying to God in your own words!

In fact, it was in writing out my prayers in a journal that helped deepen my personal relationship with the Lord!
