Let’s Study Present Truth (Pt. 2: The Who)

In 2 Peter 1:12, Peter writes:

Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

(2 Peter 1:12, emphasis added)

Who is the “you” that Peter is addressing in this verse?

Because whoever is the “you” is whoever needs to be “established in the present truth.”

So, in order to figure out the “who” we need to backtrack to WHO is the specific audience that Peter is writing to.

Rewinding To The Beginning…

At the very beginning of 2 Peter 1, we see who specifically needs to learn and become rooted in “the present truth.”

2 Peter 1:1 says:

Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

(2 Peter 1:1, emphasis added)

What does it mean to have “precious faith”?

The Greek word for “precious” in this verse is made up of two Greek words:

  • eidō – which means “to know, to understand”

  • timē – which means “reverence, honor”

So, those who have “obtained” (or “received” as some modern translations say) that kind of faith that knows, understands, reverences, and honors the Lord and His righteousness are those who need present truth.

Perhaps a better way to put it is that you can not be genuinely “established” in present truth unless you have a faith that knows, understands, honors, and reverences the Ultimate Embodiment of Truth: The Lord Jesus Christ (see 1 John 14:6).

Conclusion

So, who is present truth for, then?

It is for those whose faith knows, understands, honors, and reverences Jesus and His righteousness!

But what does it mean to know Jesus and to understand Him?

Well, for part 3 of our series, we’re gonna dive into what the book of Jeremiah can teach us on what it means to both know and understand Jesus and His righteousness!

Be sure to stay tuned!

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

-John 17:3

Amen! Maranatha!
