The Dangers of Spiritual Junk Food

Whether you know it or not, this March is National Nutrition Month!

So, here at Learning To Live, there’s gonna be content rolling out centered on–not physical nutrition, but rather–SPIRITUAL nutrition!

Let’s dive in!

According to an article on WellCurve.in, physical junk food such as burgers and ice cream can cause various harmful effects on the body.

In fact, the article shares 10 of the health-damaging downsides of junk food on the physical body.

However, I’d like to take 3 of the effects mentioned in that article and apply to spiritual junk food.

Let’s dive in!

Spiritual Junk Food Danger #1: “Heart Disease”

Jeremiah 17:9 says:

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

(Jeremiah 17:9)

What’s so dangerous about spiritual junk food is that it actually WORSENS the condition of our sinfully-wicked hearts, and causes them to become MORE wicked and MORE deceptive!

No wonder why the Bible gives such a warning in Proverbs 4:23–

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

(Proverbs 4:23)

Spiritual Junk Food Danger #2: “Increase In Anxiety”

I’m sure many of us are familiar with the words of Christ in Matthew 11:28-30.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

(Matthew 11:28-30)

The yoke of Christ brings soul-healthy rest and peace.

However, one of the dangers of spiritual junk food is that it causes anxiety, fear, and weakness in th soul.

Spiritual junk food encapsulates one in a yoke far different from Christ’s yoke.

And that yoke is the yoke of sin and transgression.

The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.

(Lamentations 1:14)

Spiritual Junk Food Danger #3: “Risk of Obesity”

Hebrews 12:1 says:

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

(Hebrews 12:1)

Probably the biggest danger with spiritual junk food is that it causes the soul to “gain” more weights of sin.

Thus, the end result is being unable to run forward and press onward in the race of God’s call for us like Paul.

I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 3:14)

Final Thoughts & Prayer

So, I would like to conclude this blog post with several final thoughts on what we just covered:

  • Spiritual junk food worsens the sinful condition of our hearts
  • And because of that, spiritual junk food sickens and worsens our characters to be fit for Heaven
  • Spiritual junk food also effects our emotions to be sick with fear and anxiety rather than cured with the restful trust of Jesus
  • Spiritual junk food causes a huge hinderance in our soul’s ability to run and endure in our Christian faith journey toward Heaven
  • And because of that, spiritual junk food puts our minds at risk of being “set on” the things of earth instead of Eternity

Friend, would you like to surrender the cravings and the weight of spiritual junk food in your heart to the Lord?

Do you desire to make today the day when you begin to change your unhealthy spiritual habits for the better?

If so, then I wanna encourage you to pray:

I would like to conclude this blog post with two beautiful Bible promises you may claim along with the above prayer:

I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

(Ps. 81:10)

The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish

(Prov. 10:3)

Amen! Maranatha!
