3 Bible Verses To Cure And Combat Pride

Dr. Eric Walsh once made an interesting statement. The statement went something like this:

“If the devil can’t use failure against you, he’ll try to use success against you.”

–Dr. Eric walsh

And one of the things the devil would use to make success something that hinders your spiritual growth and my spiritual growth is

PRIDE

3 Biblical Antidotes For Pride

So, below is a list of three Bible verses that, I believe, can cure pride and also combat pride from getting in the way of spiritual progress. It’s my hope and prayer that you’ll be blessed by these verses, and be deeply inspired to “put on……humility, [and] meekness….” (Colossians 3:12)

1. 1 Peter 5:6

In 1 Peter 5:6, it says:

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
(1 Peter 5:6)

How does this verse apply to us and our 21st century lives?
Well, this verse reminds us that it is GOD ALONE Who will exalt us “in due time.” As Proverbs 15:22 puts it: “Before honor is humility.”

To put it simply, we can’t have all the honor and prideful recognition as instantly and constantly as our natural, carnal hearts desire. As Bible-believing Christians, we must recognize that it is God Who gives us the honor IN DUE TIME–according to HIS timing, not our timing.

2. Isaiah 10:15

In Isaiah 10:15, we read:

Shall the ax boast itself against him who chops with it?
Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it?
As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up,
Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!

(Isaiah 10:15)

Okay, so this verse is basically within the context of a woeful judgement against Assyria. But, how does it apply to us in our modern world?

In a way, we’re like “axes” and “saws” and “staffs” in God’s hands. We’re simply TOOLS for God. And in Isaiah 10:15, the question is being asked if these tools have ever or will ever “boast” against its user. In a literal sense, the answer is no.

Why?

Because axes, saws, and staffs are inanimate objects. The ax never brags about how much wood it has chopped; neither has the saw ever boasted about all the boards it has cut. They’re just tools. And tools (in our real world) DO NOT TALK.

As an application to us in our modern age, as Bible-believing Christians, we’re tools in God’s hands. And just like the tools in Isaiah 10:15 never brag nor boast over what it has done, we too as Christians shouldn’t boast nor brag either. Because just like those tools in Isaiah 10:15 weren’t able to do what they were designed to do without someone using it, we as Christians would NEVER have done things without God using us. After all, Jesus said that WITHOUT HIM we can do NOTHING (John 15:5).

So, in that case, as God’s axes, His saws, and His staffs, do we truly have the right to boast against God, our Ultimate User, and try to grab all the credit?

3. 1 Chronicles 29:16

Our last and final verse for this list is 1 Chronicles 29:16:

O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build You a house for Your holy name is from Your hand, and is all Your own.
(1 Chronicles 29:16)

How does this verse apply to us?

It is from this verse we learn that EVERY SINGLE GOOD THING we do is from God’s hand, and is all His own. The good grades, the perfect job record, the blossoming ministry–EVERY SUCCESS WE EXPERIENCE IN LIFE–belongs to God and is wholly, entirely, and fully from HIM.

A Prayer

So, in conclusion, I’d like to end this post with a prayer that you may meditate on along with the 3 above verses:

Amen! Maranatha!
