3 Reasons Why Reading The Bible Is Important

In a devotional series I did several months ago, I wrote about why we should get to know God personally.

But for today’s blog post, I’m gonna list three reasons from the Bible on why it’s essential to read God’s Word personally. I mean, it’s true that there’s all kinds of theories and philosophies out there that give good reasons why personally reading the Bible is important. However, for this post, I’m gonna give 3 reasons from the Bible itself on why spending time personally reading the Word of God is essential for our spiritual well-being.

It’s my hope and prayer that, as you go over this list, you’ll be inspired to spend more time personally reading the Bible each and every day!

1) Because The Bible Washes Us

Ephesians 5:26 tells us one reason why reading the Bible is important:

that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word
(Ephesians 5:26)

This verse is talking about Christ’s relationship with the church being symbolized by marriage. However, I just love how personally applicable this modern translation makes Ephesians 5:26–

to make us holy and pure, cleansing us through the showering of the pure water of the Word of God.
(Ephesians 5:26 TPT)

In our personal lives, the Holy Bible is what cleanses us from our carnal desires. God’s Word is what washes us from Satan’s lies. The Bible is one of God’s tools to help purify us from sin and selfishness. As we behold more and more of God’s pure promises, our hearts and minds will become more and more pure.
But the key is to constantly read God’s Word on a daily basis, allowing His words to slowly but surely shower away all spiritual filth within our hearts, minds, and souls.

2) Because The Bible Revives Us

Just like gas gives the car energy to continue driving, so the Bible gives us energy to keep driving forward in God’s will for our lives

Let’s now take a look at the second reason why we should each personally read the Bible. In Psalm 119:93, we read:

I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have given me life.

(Psalm 119:93)

According to David, it was God’s precepts that gave him life.

What are “precepts?”

In Gesenius’ Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon, the word “precepts” comes from the Hebrew word piqquwd (פִּקּוּדִים), which means “commandments.”
And where are God’s commandments found? In His Holy Word.

And it is God’s commandments, it is God’s Word, which gives us the revitalizing energy to keep moving forward on our spiritual journey.

This is why personally reading the Bible is essential. It washes our hearts from the filth of sin and selfishness. Plus, it revives us with vibrant spiritual energy needed to keep on following Christ.

3) Because The Bible Empowers Us

Just like electricity gives light bulbs power to glow bright, so the Bible gives us electrifying power to live lives bright with God’s love and holiness

The final reason behind personally reading God’s Word is found in James 1:21–

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
(James 1:21)

What does this verse mean? How does it apply to us and the topic we’re discussing?
Well, I really like how The Passion Translation puts it:

So this is why we abandon everything morally impure and all forms of wicked conduct. Instead, with a sensitive spirit we absorb God’s Word, which has been implanted within our nature, for the Word of Life has power to continually deliver us.
(James 1:21 TPT)

I believe that the ultimate reason why personally reading the Bible is important is that it has the POWER to deliver us from sin and EMPOWER our lives with pure hope.

How?

By allowing the Holy Spirit to step in and actively wash our hearts through God’s Word and inspire us with spiritual vitality through personal Bible reading. And as the cleansing water, the vital energy, and the spiritual power of God’s Word is continually absorbed into our hearts each day, we’ll have a life-transforming experience with God!

An Appeal & A Prayer

Dear reader, I wanna appeal to you to consider whether or not you’re spending time in God’s Word, and allowing the Bible’s promises and precepts to wash you, revive you, and save you. If, dear reader, you sense the Holy Spirit convicting you of not spending enough time personally reading the Bible, then I appeal to you to just pray:

I’d like to conclude this blog post with a quote from A.W. Tozer that I hope and pray will inspire you to pick the Bible and truly take time to read it for yourself:

“Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian.”

~A. W. Tozer~

May each of us desire to be whole Christians, and take time to wholly read the Bible each and every day!
Amen! Maranatha!
